My 4 Favourite Ads of Superbowl 2015

This week saw many companies splash the cash on hugely expensive Super Bowl XLIX advertisements. The run up to the event was the best ever for advertisers with Youtube reporting that people watched up to almost four million hours of game day teasers leading up to the event, proving it is well worth releasing your commercial, or at least a teaser ahead of game day.

There was much debate over whether the large viewership and PR following the event justifies the spend. The New York Times reported that a sizeable 121 million people tuned in to watch the 2015 Super Bowel and of course Twitter exploded! There was 24.9 million tweets about the Superbowl and the half time show. Although that was hardly surprising since the queen of Twitter Katie Perry (with 66 million twitter followers) was performing the half time show which was once again sponsored by Pepsi. Down to the Ads - Here are my four favourites!

4. BMW

I had to give BMW a mention not just because I was on set for the making of the ad but because they put a creative spin on introducing consumers to their latest electric car the i3. The company pointed out while some things can take getting used to (like electric cars) they can end up to be great (just like the internet).

3. Clash of Clans - Revenge

Who better to use in a Super Bowl commercial than Irish actor Liam Neeson. The game Clash of Clans got it right when they did a commercial of similar style to the Taken movies that Neeson also stars in. I'm sure Taken fans were very happy when they saw this advert!

2. Always - #LikeAGirl

Always played it safe and used a shortened version of a video they had previously released that went viral. I thought their causal marketing was very effective and the fact that their creative had already already proven to go down very well online ment that little could go wrong for them with this commercial. The commercial had a powerful message that tied in with the brand very well.

1. Budweiser - "Lost Dog"

The Budweiser "Lost Dog" commercial was irresistible as ever and a like previous years the company pulled on the heart strings of the viewers by using a cute labrador puppy and clydesdale horses. It worked yet again! The company didn't have as much luck with their second Superbowl commercial which fired shots at craft breweries and as a result received much backlash from craft beer companies.

They are my four favourite commercials of the 2015 Superbowl! And I'm all ready excited for next years ads!

Kim Kardashian and Marketing: 3 Surprising Things They Have In Common

1. Social Media

Above: A recent photo of Kim Kardashian posted to her Instagram.

A very large part of marketing is now online through social channels. Social Media is something Kim is an expert on, I would go as far as saying she is obsessed! Kim has tweeted over eighteen thousand times. She might be disappointed though, she missed out on getting a place in the top ten most followed people on Twitter. At the time of writing Katie Perry holds the top spot with over sixty-two thousand followers, before Justin Bieber and Barack Obama. Kim currently stands at sixteenth place in the Twitter following leaderboard. Despite this Kim still gets paid $10,000 for a single tweet. The businesses that have the highest twitter following are all social media platforms. Youtube is the most popular business on Twitter followed by Instagram and Twitter itself.

While Instagram isnโ€™t as popular with marketers, it is Ms.Kardashian Westโ€™s favourite social network. No wonder she has the highest following of all Instagram users with over twenty-three million followers in total. What an achievement! She normally posts several photos, almost every day on Instagram. While Kim gets top marks for her personal Instagram you can see what businesses get top marks for Instagram marketing in my past blog post here.

2. Loyal Following

One aim for marketers is to target their marketing efforts correctly so they get noticed by their target audience. They make potential customers fall in love with their product/service and hope they turn into a loyal customer. Kim Kardashian knows a thing or two about getting noticed. Last year she posed nude for Paper magazine who intended to 'break the internet'. The result over thirty-four million website hits for Paper and some serious publicity for Kim Kardashian. As if she didnโ€™t have enough followers, she was about to get so many more and she knows how to treat her loyal followers well. Kim regularly answers her fans questions on social media.

3. Branding

Branding is a vital part of marketing and marketers are always trying to build their companies brand. Kim is no different and her investment into the brand of Kim Kardashian herself, her Dash clothing brand as well as other lines has paid off. The celebrity is now worth $65 million. The moral of the story; you should always aim to extend your brand just as Kim has.

10 Businesses Who are #Winning on Instagram

Many businesses have yet to create a presence on Instagram. For those that have already have it is really paying off. With businesses gaining over ten million fans on Instagram how is this a social network businesses can ignore, particularly the B2C ones. Here are the ten best Instagram business accounts who are in my opinion #winning at Instagram marketing.

Fedex

Fedex have one of the best Instagram accounts I have seen. Transport companies don't sound very glamorous, Fedex is the exception. Who could dislike a plane flying into the sun set. Although they could ease off on the self promotion a little they still rock at Instagram.

Study Mode

Study Mode almost makes me want to study! Their Instagram makes studying look super easy and gives students excellent motivation to do their work. If only studying really was as fun as they make it look!

Redbull

Redbull have a very interesting Instagram consisting of adventure shots to tie in with their overall brand personality. They mix in just the right amount of self promotion now and again and when they do it's creative. Well done Redbull.

Tesco Foods

Tesco really hit the sweet spot with their Tesco Foods Instagram making their followers hungry every single time they post. They have the balance right too adding the perfect amount of humour in with their gorgeous food pics.

Nike

Nike has the most followers of any business on Instagram with just over ten million at the time of writing. Their photos are beautiful and consist of just about everything you do in runners.

Ben & Jerry's

Ben & Jerry's have done so good at Instagram marketing that Instagram now use them as a case study. They post photos of their new flavours, their ice-cream in different places around the world and even some short videos like the one below on how to make an ice-cream sandwich.

Starbucks

Starbucks have a knack at marketing and nothing changes when it comes to their Instagram marketing which looks pretty cool. Even non coffee lovers must love it! They post photos of coffee as well as their latest products with a creative twist!

Gopro

Everyone knows that Gopro Youtube videos are nothing short of amazing. They would make anyone want to get a Gopro and go trill seeking, their Instagram has the same effect. Gopro posts photos of people adventuring taken using their Gopro cameras and they are nothing short of amazing.

Oreo

Oreo get super creative on Instagram sharing photos and videos of different ways to eat Oreo and recipes that use their biscuits. However they don't have as many followers as the other businesses.

Adobe

You don't see many B2B companies on Instagram as they tend not to do as well and while Adobe is a mix of both they offer a pretty strong Instagram account. Then again I guess photos and are their game. Adobe seek to inspire on their Instagram and always share designs and photos that think outside the box - of course many of them use Adobe products to help create this work.

These are the ten businesses I feel are winning on Instagram. While they might not have as many followers as Kim Kardashian they are excelling at Instagram marketing. 8 Top Notch Ways to Spend This Years Marketing Budget

As the first full working week of 2015 begins marketers worldwide will be deciding how to invest their marketing budget. Here are the areas I consider worthy of investment in 2015.

#1 Hire personnel who are both creative and technical

Many companies have already chosen to hire marketing personnel in 2015, with some recruitment drives already in full swing! Investing in people this year is a great idea but is important your new marketer is both creative and tech savvy. Creative in marketing is always a must. You need an ideas person to drive your marketing efforts ahead of competitors. This person will bring original ideas that will excite customers. There is also growing need for marketers to be technically minded as more and more marketing is done online and involves analytics, both which require technical ability. A mix of the two is the perfect combination!

#2 Invest more in PR particularly in Online PR

In recent times consumers and businesses (in the case of B2B Marketing) are becoming immune to print advertising. PR comes across as far more trustworthy for customers and as a result they tend to pay more attention to it. This year you should invest more on PR than print advertising. There has been a surge in the amount of people reading online so as well as targeting your PR efforts towards traditional forms of print media also target online publications.

#3 Increase Mobile Marketing spend

Some say mobile browsing will take over desktop browsing this year. In my opinion this is a little drastic but no doubt the use of mobile platforms is growing rapidly. Optimising your website for mobile and engaging in mobile advertising should most defiantly be on your agenda for 2015 since mobile usage is clearly growing and will continue to grow this year.

#4 Spend more being social on Social Media

Interacting and engaging with customers on social media rather than simply posting for the sake of it should be the number one focus for businesses this year. This mainly comes in the form of labour rather than a cash spend, the time investment will pay off. The aim should be that customers want to visit your page themselves rather than being prompted to by posts on their feed. Marketers should aim to please on social media and use it to find out what exactly their customers want to see them do on social media in 2015.

#5 Invest in Blogging and Vloging

Their has been a huge increase in the amount of blogs starting up in recent times and company blogs are an ideal way to communicate directly to your customers. Similarly video exploded in 2014 and in the past few years videos for marketing purposes have grown steadily. Businesses should aim to be an expert in their field and provide advice to their customers on trending industry topics that their customers are interested in as well as providing them with advice. Companies videos can also be incorporated into their blog, both compliment each other well. This will help businesses to get noticed by their customers and cross promote each platform.

#6 Build a Microsite

Building a microsite to help and advise customers about your industry is hugely valuable. It portrays that your business is top of its game in your industry and your business is seen as being helpful. Most customers now go online and do extensive research on a product before purchasing it so making a micro-site is more important now than ever. Setting up a microsite is a great method of indirect self promotion and your customers will love you for it!

#7 Invest in Customer Focused Market Research

Research is vital to successful marketing, particularly research into your customers changing needs. It is key to great marketing for the entire year and wise to assign some of your marketing budget to market research which should be engaged in early on in the year so to help you with your marketing efforts going forward.

#8 Invest in the right online advertising

False clicks and fake clicks by bots and online scammers have been widely reported in marketing news this year. Choosing the right placements for your online advertising can reduce the chances of of false clicks. It is important for companies to choose the placement sites of their online advertisements themselves and not allow the display networks to chose what placements they 'think' are good.

For example cooking equipment advertisements might be placed automatically on a gaming site alongside a cooking game. It is however more likely is user is more interest in gaming rather than cooking.

Investing in search advertising is a safer bet. Use search advertising or choose your placements a) yourself and b) wisely to avoid wasting your precious marketing budget.

ย

All the best to the companies deciding where their marketing budget will go for the coming year. I feel considering the above areas for investment will mean your on the right track for 2015. If you have any questions, comments or opinions I would be delighted to hear from you. Feel free to email me padraigloconnor@gmail.com or use the comment section below.

Online Wording Is Key in Marketing.

Transport companies slipped up this week when it came to digital marketing and there is a lesson to be learned. The way digital marketers write online is hugely important particularly for global companies since the same thing is said very differently from country to country, more so than you'd think. It is something I've grown to learn over the course of my time in the states.

For example over there it is much more acceptable to say 'convenient' rather than 'handy', whereas in Ireland it is probably the opposite. That is just one example - over the course of the day you find many people looking at you with blank faces wondering what you mean by what you said.

Online writing offers far less context and tone than a video or in person communication as described above. Sometimes online writing can be misinterpreted, come across wrong or just look unprofessional.

On New Year's Eve Uber sent out an email marketing campaign to its US customers:

Now let's hope this wasn't sent out to the companies Irish customers or if it was that they don't have an Irish marketing department! While Irish people would know what the popular taxi hailing app means I'm sure an Irish company would have worded the email better, because the word 'ride', has two very different meanings in Ireland.

This happened after Ryanair was made a laughing stock of by comedian Ryan Hand when they misinterpreted a joke on twitter.

This comes over a year after Ryanair pledged to improve their customer service. Airlines in general have had terrible luck over the years since the rise of social media. Almost five years ago the band Sons of Maxwell launched a song entitled 'United Breaks Guitars', on Youtube which detailed their poor experience when traveling on United Airlines and saw the companies share price decrease significantly.

Perhaps these companies and others should invest more of their marketing budget on Social CRM which I feel will become even more important in 2015.

My New Marketing Blog!

Happy New Year - Welcome to my new Marketing Blog. It's where I'll post any exciting or interesting marketing "stuff" and give my take on it - I just couldn't handle the twitter character limit!

This blog is hosted on my personal website, as you might have noticed that's where I market myself. I encourage other students or individuals to market themselves too. It is a competitive job market out there so now more then ever it is important that each individual differentiate themselves and develop their own personal brand. For people just developing their personal brand I am always willing to give advice or answer any questions you might have. Don't hesitate to get in touch it's not so long ago I was just starting off myself.

A big thanks to Squarespace who make my site possible and who have been incredibly helpful over the past few months.
